Free tool by an official Shopify Partner

Shopify Theme Detector

What Shopify theme is this store using?

Paste any public Shopify store URL. Instantly see the live theme name, schema, version, theme id and whether it looks like a Theme Store base or a custom build.

  • Theme name, schema and version
  • Theme id and Theme Store id when exposed
  • Custom vs Theme Store signals
  • Built by NP SoftTech, Shopify Partner
Detect a store

Use the public storefront homepage. Password pages and admin URLs will not return full theme details.

How it works

Three steps to identify any public Shopify theme

No browser extension required. Paste the URL, we fetch the storefront, and you get the theme details Shopify already exposes in the page.

  1. Enter the store URL

    Paste a public Shopify storefront homepage, custom domain or myshopify.com address.

  2. We read the storefront

    Our server fetches the HTML and parses Shopify.theme plus supporting Shopify signals safely.

  3. Review theme details

    See name, schema, version, ids and whether the theme looks custom, then plan the next design step.

What you get

Clear theme signals before a redesign, audit or competitor check

Published theme name

The name the merchant set in admin. Useful for labels, but often renamed away from the Theme Store title.

Schema name and version

Usually closer to the real base theme, such as Dawn or a paid Theme Store schema, plus the version string when exposed.

Theme and Theme Store ids

Theme id identifies the live theme record. Theme Store id, when present, points to an official Theme Store listing.

Custom theme signals

Missing Theme Store id with an unknown schema usually means a custom, heavily modified or off-Store theme.

Shop domain

When available, we surface the myshopify.com shop handle linked in the storefront bootstrap.

Partner-ready next step

Found a theme worth improving? NP SoftTech can customise it, redesign key templates or rebuild cleanly.

Why detect a theme

Faster briefs for competitors, redesigns and agency handoffs

Browsing the Theme Store guessing which template a polished competitor uses can take hours. A detector gives you a proven starting point from stores that already sell in your niche.

Designers use it to research options for clients. Merchants use it before a redesign. Agencies use it to scope theme work without guessing the foundation.

  • Spot whether a competitor runs Dawn, a paid Theme Store theme or a custom build
  • Share theme name and ids in a project brief
  • Decide customise versus rebuild before you write the proposal

Manual check

How to find a Shopify theme in page source

Prefer to look yourself? You can read the same signals our detector uses in about a minute.

  1. Open page source

    Open the storefront in Chrome, then view source.

    Windows CtrlU Mac ⌘⌥U
  2. Search for Shopify.theme

    Find the theme object Shopify injects into the HTML.

    CtrlF or ⌘F Shopify.theme
  3. Read the JSON fields

    Focus on schema name, version, theme id and Theme Store id when present.

  4. Watch for renamed themes

    Owners often rename the published theme. Schema name is usually the stronger clue when Theme Store id is missing.

page-source / Shopify.theme
Shopify.theme = {
  "name": "Dawn",
  "id": 129690763353,
  "schema_name": "Dawn",
  "schema_version": "15.0.0",
  "theme_store_id": 887,
  "role": "main"
};
  • nameAdmin label. Often renamed.
  • schema_nameCloser to the real base theme.
  • theme_store_idOfficial Theme Store listing when set.
  • null idOften custom or unpublished.

FAQ

Shopify Theme Detector questions.

How the tool works, what it can find and when to ask NP SoftTech for theme help.

  • Public storefront URLs
  • Theme name and ids
  • Shopify Partner support
How does the NP SoftTech Shopify Theme Detector work?
You paste a public Shopify store URL. Our server fetches the homepage HTML and parses Shopify.theme and related signals. Results usually include theme name, schema name, version, theme id, Theme Store id, shop domain and whether the theme looks custom or unpublished on the Theme Store.
Will it work on every Shopify store?
It works on most public storefronts. Password-protected stores, some heavily customised head markup, or stores that hide theme metadata may return limited results. Always use the public homepage URL, not the admin.
Why does the theme name look custom or renamed?
Store owners can rename the published theme in Shopify admin. The name field is often a private label like “Main” or a campaign title. Schema name and Theme Store id are usually more useful for identifying the base theme when they are present.
Can it detect custom or heavily modified themes?
Yes, when Shopify still exposes theme metadata. If Theme Store id is missing and the schema is not a known Shopify free theme, we mark it as likely custom or unpublished. Heavily rewritten themes may still report a familiar schema name such as Dawn.
Is this also a Shopify app detector?
Not yet. This tool focuses on theme identification. If you need app stack review as part of a redesign or performance pass, include that in a project inquiry and we can review it manually.
Do you store the URLs I check?
Checks are processed to return results. Do not submit private or sensitive admin URLs. Use only public storefront homepages.
Can NP SoftTech customise or rebuild the theme you find?
Yes. As an official Shopify Partner we customise themes, redesign storefronts, add custom sections and rebuild on Online Store 2.0 when the current foundation is holding you back. Share the store URL you checked in a project inquiry.
How do I find a Shopify theme manually?
Open the store, view page source, and search for Shopify.theme. You will usually see a JSON object with name, id, schema_name, schema_version, theme_store_id and role. Theme Store id maps to an official Theme Store listing when present. Null usually means a customised or off-Store theme. Many stores rename the theme, so the name alone can be misleading.
