Core Web Vitals are three measurements of how a page feels: how soon the main content shows, how soon a tap does something, and whether the layout jumps while you read. Google uses them in Search as page-experience signals. You do not need to become a performance engineer to use the report.
Last reviewed: September 2026. Thresholds below are the ones Google has published on web.dev for a “good” experience. Recheck that table if you are quoting a client. Why they matter: speed and SEO.
LCP: shrink or postpone the big hero. INP: fewer heavy scripts on tap. CLS: give images width and height, stop injecting banners above content. Measure a real URL on page speed test.
| Vital | In one line | Usual culprit |
|---|---|---|
| LCP | When the main block appears | Huge image, slow host, late CSS |
| INP | How long after a tap until the page reacts | Chat widgets, sliders, fat JavaScript |
| CLS | How much things move | Images without size, ads, webfonts |
Field versus lab
Search Console shows field data when enough users hit the URL. A lab run (PageSpeed Insights, our tool) is for debugging. Do not celebrate a lab 95 if field LCP is still poor on cheap Androids in India.
What to do this week
Open the worst template. If LCP is an image, follow optimize images. If INP is a widget, remove it from the homepage. WordPress steps: speed up WordPress. Shopify: Shopify speed checklist.
